How does this medication work? What will it do for me?
Bismuth subsalicylate - calcium carbonate belongs to a class of medications called antacids and adsorbents. It is used to help relieve heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, nausea, and diarrhea. How bismuth subsalicylate - calcium carbonate works is not completely understood, but it is thought to work by coating the stomach and intestines (protecting them from stomach acid), by reducing inflammation in the stomach, and by killing certain bacteria.
Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. How should I use this medication?
The usual recommended dose for adults is 525 mg (2 tablets) every 30 minutes as needed, up to a maximum of 16 tablets in 24 hours. For children 10 to 12 years of age, the usual dose is 262 mg (1 tablet) every 30 minutes as needed, up to a maximum of 8 tablets in 24 hours. The tablets should be chewed or allowed to dissolve in the mouth.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are
taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is important to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist.
Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.
Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

Each chewable tablet contains bismuth subsalicylate 262 mg and calcium carbonate 350 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: flavour, magnesium stearate, mannitol, povidone, Red 27 Lake, sodium saccharin, and talc.
Cherry-Flavoured
Each chewable, cherry-flavoured tablet contains bismuth subsalicyclate 262 mg and calcium carbonate 350 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: adipic acid, flavour, magnesium stearate, mannitol, povidone, Red 27 Lake, Red 40 Lake, sodium saccharin, and talc.
Who should NOT take this medication?
Do not take this medication if you:
- are allergic to bismuth subsalicylate, calcium carbonate, or any ingredients of this medication
- are allergic to other salicylate products (e.g., ASA)
- have a bleeding problem
- have a stomach or intestinal ulcer
- have bloody or black stool
Do not give this medication to children or adolescents with flu-like symptoms or chickenpox.
