How does this medication work? What will it do for me?
This medication is used for the treatment of painful urination, urgency
of urination, frequent urination at night, and incontinence. These symptoms
may result from catheter use or conditions such as cystitis,
prostatitis, urethritis,
urethrocystitis, and urethrotrigonitis.
This medication works by decreasing muscle spasms in the bladder.
Your doctor may choose to use a medication for conditions other than the ones
listed in these drug information articles. If you're unsure why you are taking
this medication, contact your doctor.
How should I use this medication?
The usual recommended dose for adults and adolescents over 12 years is one
tablet (flavoxate 200 mg) three or four times a day. It is best to
take these tablets after meals. Beneficial effects on the bladder muscles may
occur as quickly as two to three hours after taking the medication.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as
body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor
has recommended a dose different from the one above, do not change the way
that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is very important that this medication be taken on a regular schedule as
prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as
soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed
dose and carry on with your regular schedule. Do not double-up on doses.
Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

What form(s) does this medication come in?
Each white, sugar-coated tablet contains flavoxate hydrochloride 200 mg.
Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.
Who should NOT take this medication?
Flavoxate should not be used by anyone who:
- has obstruction of the stomach or intestines
- has stomach bleeding
- has a blockage of the lower urinary tract
- is under 12 years of age
