We are busy people on the go with little time to get everything done. We eat out for lunch meetings, at home in front of the television, or from the snack machine for a quick bite.

Restaurants are offering even larger sizes that add to more calorie intake than needed. Maybe we are engrossed in our favourite show as we wind down for the day and we do not realize how many times we have went back for more portions.

There are easy ways to control the calorie intake from the food portions you are consuming:

When eating at home:

  • It is easy to overeat when you are involved in something entertaining. Put only the portion you are eating into your bowl and store the rest in containers and put it away in the refrigerator.
  • Serve the food on individualized plates and leave the larger serving bowls in the kitchen, or put the excess portions away.

When eating out:

  • Ask the server for a takeout container and put away the extra portions to eat at a later meal.
  • Split the entree with other dinner guests if the portions are too large for one person.
  • Try to avoid ordering appetizers.
