Discussing allergies with your doctor

Allergies can be a nuisance, but you can do something about it. Make an appointment to see your doctor about your allergies if:

  • you suspect you have allergies
  • you have suffered with allergies for some time but haven't taken any medications
  • you are taking allergy medications but are experiencing side effects
  • you are taking allergy medications but your symptoms are not completely relieved
  • your allergy symptoms are interfering with your daily life
  • you have other medical conditions (e.g., asthma, high blood pressure, glaucoma)
  • you are taking medications for other medical conditions and want to ensure your allergy treatment is appropriate for you
  • you are taking allergy medications but your treatment is no longer providing relief for your allergy symptoms
  • you are wondering if you are a candidate for immunotherapy (allergy shots)

There are many treatment options available to help you cope with allergic rhinitis. Your doctor will also be able to help you if you have questions about your current treatment. Prepare for your visit by writing down any questions you have. Use our Doctor Discussion Guide to help you get started.
