How does this medication work? What will it do for me?
Cetuximab belongs to a group of medications called antineoplastics, or anticancer medications. It is used alone or in combination with another anticancer medication, irinotecan, to treat a certain type of colorectal cancer that has spread to other parts of the body (metastatic colorectal cancer) that has not responded to other specific anticancer medications.
It is also used along with radiation therapy to treat a certain skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) located on the head or neck. Cetuximab is a monoclonal antibody that recognizes and attaches to certain types of cancer cells. This may prevent cancer cells from growing and dividing.
Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here.
