How does this medication work? What will it do for me?
Doxycycline belongs to the class of medications known as tetracylcines.
It is an antibiotic that is used for the treatment of certain
infections that are caused by bacteria. It is most commonly used to
treat lung infections such as pneumonia
and bronchitis, urinary tract
infections such as cystitis,
throat infections such as tonsillitis,
skin infections, and sexually
transmitted infections.

How should I use this medication?
The usual recommended adult dose of doxycycline is 200 mg for
the first dose followed by 100 mg once daily at the same time
each day, with or after a meal. The dose and length of treatment with
doxycycline varies with the condition being treated.
The medication should be taken with plenty of water while standing or sitting
upright to reduce the risk of injury to the esophagus. This medication should
not be taken with antacids or iron preparations, as these may interfere with
its effectiveness.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such
as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If
your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here,
do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting
your doctor.
It is very important that this medication be taken exactly as prescribed
by your doctor. Finish all of this medication, even if you start to
feel better. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue
on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose,
skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular dosing schedule.
Do not double doses.
Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

What form(s) does this medication come in?
Vibra-Tabs
Each orange, film-coated tablet contains doxycycline hyclate equivalent to doxycycline 100 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, ethylcellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate/sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, talc, titanium dioxide, FD&C Yellow No. 6 and aluminum hydroxide.
Vibramycin Capsules
Each blue, hard gelatin capsule contains doxycycline hyclate equivalent to doxycycline 100 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate/ sodium lauryl sulfate; capsule shell: gelatin, sulfur dioxide, titanium dioxide and FD&C Blue No. 1.
Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.
Who should NOT take this medication?
The side effects listed below are not experienced by everyone who
takes this medication. If you are concerned about side effects, discuss
the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor. Your health
professional may be able to help you deal with some of the effects.
The following side effects may go away as your body becomes used
to the medicine; check with your doctor if they continue or become bothersome.
More common:
- cramps or burning of the stomach
- diarrhea
Less common:
- itching of the rectal or genital areas
- sore mouth or tongue
Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following
side effects occur:
More common:
- increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight
Rare:
- abdominal pain
- bulging soft spot on head of infants
- headache
- loss of appetite
- nausea and vomiting
- visual changes
- yellowing skin
Some people may experience side effects other than those listed.

you are taking this medication.
