How does this medication work? What will it do for me?
Gabapentin belongs to the class of medications called anti-epileptics. It is used in combination with other seizure control medications for the management and prevention of seizures associated with epilepsy. Gabapentin does not cure epilepsy and only works to control seizures as long as the medication is taken. Gabapentin works by affecting the transmission of nerve signals in the brain.
Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.
Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.
How should I use this medication?
The usual recommended adult dose of gabapentin begins with 300 mg 3 times daily and increases to as much as 600 mg 3 times daily, according to individual need and as prescribed by the doctor. The usual maximum daily dose is 2,400 mg taken in 3 equal doses of 800 mg each.
Gabapentin may be taken with or without food.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is important to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is less than 4 hours until your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Store this medication at room temperature and keep it out of the reach of children.

Capsules
100 mg
Each white opaque cap with white opaque body, hard gelatin capsule, with white to off-white powder fill, imprinted "APO 100", contains 100 mg of gabapentin. Nonmedicinal ingredients: magnesium stearate, sodium croscarmellose, and talc; capsule shell: edible blue ink, gelatin, silicon dioxide, sodium lauryl sulphate, and titanium dioxide.
300 mg
Each yellow opaque cap with yellow opaque body, hard gelatin capsule, with white to off-white powder fill, imprinted "APO 300", contains 300 mg of gabapentin. Nonmedicinal ingredients: magnesium stearate, sodium croscarmellose, and talc; capsule shell: edible blue ink, gelatin, silicon dioxide, sodium lauryl sulphate, titanium dioxide, and yellow iron oxide.
400 mg
Each orange opaque cap with orange opaque body, hard gelatin capsule, with white to off-white powder fill, imprinted "APO 400", contains 400 mg of gabapentin. Nonmedicinal ingredients: magnesium stearate, sodium croscarmellose, and talc; capsule shell: edible blue ink, gelatin, red iron oxide, silicon dioxide, sodium lauryl sulphate, titanium dioxide, and yellow iron oxide.
Tablets
600 mg
Each white, oval, film-coated tablet, scored and engraved "GAB 600" on one side, "APO" on the other side, contains 600 mg of gabapentin. Nonmedicinal ingredients: copovidone, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, purified water, and titanium dioxide.
800 mg
Each white, oval, film-coated tablet, scored and engraved "GAB 800" on one side, "APO" on the other side, contains 800 mg of gabapentin. Nonmedicinal ingredients: copovidone, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, purified water, and titanium dioxide.
Who should NOT take this medication?
Do not take gabapentin if you are allergic to gabapentin or any ingredients of this medication.
