How does this medication work? What will it do for me?
Cefuroxime is an antibiotic that belongs to the family of medications known as cephalosporins. It is used to treat infections caused by bacteria. It is most often used to treat infections of the ear, throat, sinus, lung, and skin.
Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the
ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this
with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to
your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.
How should I use this medication?
Adults: The recommended dose of cefuroxime ranges from 250 mg twice
daily to 500 mg twice daily. Taking cefuroxime with food helps the medication
be better absorbed into the bloodstream.
Children: The recommended children's dose of cefuroxime ranges from
10 mg to 15 mg per kg of body weight twice daily. The medication
should be take with food. The exact dose depends on the condition being treated.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as
body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor
has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change
the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is very important that this medication be taken exactly as prescribed by
your doctor. Finish all of this medication, even if you start to feel better.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular
schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and
continue on with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
What form(s) does this medication come in?
Suspension
Dry, white to pale yellow, tutti-frutti-flavored granules. After reconstitution, each 5 mL contains: cefuroxime 125 mg (as cefuroxime axetil). Nonmedicinal ingredients: acesulfame potassium, aspartame, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, stearic acid, sucrose (about 3 g/5 mL), tutti frutti flavoring and xanthan gum.
Tablet
250 mg
Each white to off-white, film-coated, capsule-shaped, biconvex tablet, engraved with "GXES7" on one side, contains cefuroxime 250 mg (as cefuroxime axetil). Nonmedicinal ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, hydrogenated vegetable oil, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, methylparaben, microcrystalline cellulose, propylene glycol, propylparaben, sodium benzoate, sodium lauryl sulfate and titanium dioxide.
500 mg
Each white to off-white, film-coated, capsule-shaped, biconvex tablet, engraved with "GXEG2" on one side, contains cefuroxime 500 mg (as cefuroxime axetil). Nonmedicinal ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, hydrogenated vegetable oil, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, methylparaben, microcrystalline cellulose, propylene glycol, propylparaben, sodium benzoate, sodium lauryl sulfate and titanium dioxide.

Who should NOT take this medication?
Cefuroxime axetil should not be taken by anyone who is allergic to cefuroxime,
any of the cephalosporin antibiotics, or any of the ingredients of this medication.
