How does this medication work? What will it do for me?
Omeprazole belongs to the family of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It slows or prevents the production of acid within the stomach.
It is used to treat conditions where reduction in acid secretion is required for proper healing, including stomach and intestinal ulcers (gastric and duodenal ulcers), the prevention and treatment of ulcers associated with medications known as NSAIDs, reflux esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, heartburn, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
It is also used in combination with antibiotics to treat stomach ulcers caused by H. pylori bacteria.
Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. How should I use this medication?
The usual recommended dose of omeprazole is 10 mg to 40 mg once daily. The dose and length of treatment depends on the condition being treated. This medication can be taken with or without food.
When used to treat stomach ulcers caused by H. pylori in adults, the dose of omeprazole is 20 mg twice daily taken with amoxicillin 1,000 mg twice daily and clarithromycin 500 mg twice daily, all for 7 days. Another dosing regimen for H. pylori infections is omeprazole 20 mg, metronidazole 500 mg, and clarithromycin 250 mg, all twice daily for 7 days.
Many things can affect the dose of a medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is important to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Each two-piece HPMC capsule filled with pellets and consisting of a pink cap imprinted with "OME 10" and a pink body imprinted with "OME 10", contains omeprazole 10 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: carrageenan, croscarmellose sodium, dibutyl sebacate, hypromellose, hypromellose phthalate, iron oxide red, lactose anhydrous, low-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, polysorbate 80, potassium chloride, povidone, talc, titanium dioxide, and water.

Who should NOT take this medication?
Omeprazole should not be taken by anyone who is allergic to omeprazole or to any of the ingredients of the medication.
