How does this medication work? What will it do for me?

Ciclopirox belongs to the group of medications known as antifungals. It works by preventing certain types of fungus from growing and reproducing. The cream and lotion form of this medication are used to treat certain types of fungal infections of the skin. The lacquer form is used as part of a treatment plan to treat fungal infections of the nails. The shampoo form of this medication is used to treat and prevent dandruff or to treat seborrhoeic dermatitis (a condition that causes itchy, scaly, flaky, and red skin) caused by specific fungus on the scalp.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are using this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop using this medication without consulting your doctor.

Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to use this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

How should I use this medication?

Ciclopirox topical solution (nail lacquer) should be applied once daily, preferably at bedtime or 8 hours before washing, to all affected nails with the applicator brush provided.

Before starting this medication, file away any loose nail material with an emery board or clippers, as required, or as directed by your doctor. Apply an even layer of the medication over the entire surface of the affected nail, and, if possible, under the nail and the skin beneath the nail. Let the medication dry for about 30 seconds before putting on socks or stockings. Ciclopirox should not be removed on a daily basis. Daily applications should be made over the previous coat. On a weekly basis (every 7 days), remove the old layer of ciclopirox with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Use nail files or clippers to remove as much of the damaged nail before reapplying a fresh coat of ciclopirox. Repeat this cycle throughout your treatment.

The length of treatment depends on the extent of the infection and the response to the medication. You may need to visit a health care professional about once a month to remove unattached, infected nails. For many people, a completely clear nail may not result by using this medication. Ciclopirox should be used only under supervision of your doctor and for no longer than 48 weeks.

Many things can affect the dose of a medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important that this medication be used exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss an application, apply it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed application and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing an application, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light by placing it in its original carton after each use, and keep it out of the reach of children. Ciclopirox is flammable, so keep it away from heat and open flame.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

What form(s) does this medication come in?

Lacquer
Each gram of clear, colourless to slightly yellowish solution contains 80 mg ciclopirox. Nonmedicinal ingredients: ethyl acetate, isopropyl alcohol, and butyl monoester of poly (methylvinyl ether/maleic acid) in isopropyl alcohol.

Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

Who should NOT take this medication?

Ciclopirox should not be used by anyone who is allergic to ciclopirox or to any of the ingredients of the medication.
