How does this medication work? What will it do for me?

This medication is used to treat certain skin conditions, including psoriasis and eczema. It works by reducing inflammation of the skin.

Your doctor may choose to use this medication for other conditions not mentioned here. If you're unsure why you are using this medication, contact your doctor.

How should I use this medication?

Apply the medication to the affected area two or three times daily and rub in gently, or use it as directed by your doctor. It is important to use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

This medication should be used cautiously where infection is present and should be applied carefully so as to avoid spreading the infection.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the suggestion above, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.

If you miss an application of this medicine, use it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

Do not apply amcinonide to the eyes.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

What form(s) does this medication come in?

Cream

Each g contains amcinonide 1 mg (0.1%). Nonmedicinal ingredients: benzyl alcohol 2.2 % as the preservative, ethoxylated stearyl alcohol, glycerin, isopropyl palmitate, lactic acid, purified water and sorbitol solution. Lanolin-, propylene glycol-, tartrazine- and urea-free.

Lotion

Each bottle contains amcinonide 0.1%. Nonmedicinal ingredients: benzyl alcohol as a preservative, emulsifying wax, glycerin, isopropyl palmitate, lactic acid, purified water and sorbitol solution. Lanolin-, propylene glycol-, tartrazine- and urea-free.

Ointment

Each g contains amcinonide 1 mg (0.1%) in a formulated base. Nonmedicinal ingredients: benzyl alcohol, emulsifying wax, Tenox II and white petrolateum. Tartrazine-free.

Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

Who should NOT take this medication?

Amcinonide should not be used by people with:

  • fungal diseases of the skin
  • untreated bacterial infections
  • tuberculosis of the skin
  • certain viral diseases such as herpes simplex, vaccinia and varicella (chickenpox)
  • allergy to any of the product's components
