How does this medication work? What will it do for me?
Testosterone belongs to the class of medications called androgens (male
hormones). This medication is used to replace testosterone in males who have
conditions caused by low testosterone levels due to castration (removal of testes).
It is also used to treat impotence (erectile difficulty, or the inability to
attain or maintain an erection) and other male sexual problems when they are
due to low testosterone levels.
Testosterone is also used (along with other medications) to treat osteoporosis
(bone loss) caused by old age in both men and women by stimulating bone-building.
Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the
ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this
with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to
your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.
Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms
as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor
has not prescribed it.
How should I use this medication?
Men: The usual adult dose of testosterone in men ranges from 100 mg
to 400 mg injected by your doctor every 3 to 10 weeks in the gluteus maximus
muscle (buttocks). The dose and length of treatment will depend on your condition,
and your response to the medication.
Men and women: The usual recommended dose to achieve anabolic (muscle
or bone-building) effect is 200 mg to 400 mg injected every 3 to 4
weeks. Your doctor will adjust the dose depending on the individual's age, gender,
and condition.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as
body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor
has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change
the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is very important that this medication be used on a regular schedule as
prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose of this medication, call your doctor
as soon as you remember to schedule your next dose.
Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

What form(s) does this medication come in?
Each mL contains testosterone cypionate 100 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: benzyl alcohol and benzyl benzoate in cottonseed oil. Vials of 10 mL.
Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.
Who should NOT take this medication?
This medication should not be used by:
- men with known or suspected prostate cancer
- anyone with serious heart or kidney disease
- anyone who has has excess calcium in their blood (hypercalcemia)
- women who are pregnant or may become pregnant
- anyone who is allergic to any ingredient of the medication
