How does this medication work? What will it do for me?
This medication contains 2 active ingredients. Hydrocortisone belongs to the family of medications called topical corticosteroids. It works by blocking the processes that lead to inflammation and itching. Urea is an emollient, moisturizer, and antipruritic (anti-itch agent). It helps to keep the skin hydrated and well moisturized.
Hydrocortisone - urea is used to treat skin conditions associated with symptoms of itching, redness, dryness, crusting, scaling, and inflammation.
Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are using this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop using this medication without consulting your doctor.
Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.
How should I use this medication?
Apply a thin layer of this medication to the affected skin area(s) 2 to 3 times daily until the skin has healed, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not apply this medication to your eyes.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones given here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is important to use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose of this medication, apply it as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and carry on with your regular schedule.
Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from heat and freezing, and keep it out of the reach of children.
Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
What form(s) does this medication come in?
Each tube or jar contains micronized hydrocortisone acetate 1% in an aqueous emollient hydrating base consisting of urea 10% (pH approximately 7). Nonmedicinal ingredients: caprylic/capric triglyceride, ceteareth-12, ceteareth-20, cetyl alcohol,
disodium EDTA, germaben II, glyceryl stearate, isopropyl myristate, mineral oil and lanolin alcohol, potassium phosphate monobasic, propylene glycol, purified water, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium phosphate monobasic, and xantham gum.
Each bottle contains micronized hydrocortisone acetate 1% in an aqueous emollient hydrating base consisting of urea 10%. Nonmedicinal ingredients: acetylated lanolin and cetylacetate, ceteareth-12, ceteareth-20, citric acid anhydrous, citric acid
monohydrated, decanoic acid triglyceride, disodium edetate, germaben II, glycerin, glyceryl monostearate, isopropyl myristate, octyl dodecanol, purified water, sodium hydroxide, sodium phosphate dibasic, and xantham gum.
Who should NOT take this medication?
Do not use this medication if you:
- are allergic to hydrocortisone, urea, or any ingredients of this medication
- have untreated tuberculosis, fungal, or bacterial infections of the skin, or viral infections such as chickenpox, herpes, or vaccinia
