How does this medication work? What will it do for me?

Salbutamol is a bronchodilator used for the treatment of asthma, chronic bronchitis, and other breathing disorders. It works by opening the airways and making breathing easier.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

How should I use this medication?

The usual dose to relieve asthma symptoms is 1 to 2 inhalations (also called "puffs"). For children four years of age and older, 1 puff is recommended; the dose may be increased to 2 puffs if required. For adults, 1 to 2 puffs are recommended; more puffs may be needed to relieve symptoms during a more severe attack.

The usual dose for long-term treatment of asthma is 1 to 2 puffs (or 1 puff for children four years and older) four times daily. The maximum daily dose is 8 puffs for adults and 4 puffs for children. To prevent exercise-induced asthma, the usual adult dose is 2 puffs before exercise. For children, it is 1 puff before exercise (this dose may be increased to 2 puffs if required). Dosage is usually individualized by your doctor.

To ensure you use the inhaler correctly and receive the proper dose of the medication, ask your doctor, pharmacist, or other health professional for instruction on its use. The successful use of this inhaler by children depends on the ability of the individual child to learn the proper use of the inhaler. During inhalation, children should be assisted or supervised by an adult who knows the proper procedure.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as the severity of the condition, body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is very important not to exceed the prescribed dose. If difficulty in breathing persists, call your doctor at once.

Always carry your inhaler with you so you can use it immediately in case of an episode of asthma.

Keep out of the reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
