You know that some foods can give you a wicked case of indigestion. Usually, you try to avoid them. But sometimes you just want to indulge, especially on the weekend. Whether it's a weekend BBQ, a dinner out with friends, or beer and wings after the game, you want to feel free to eat the foods you love - even these 5 yummy "weekend wreckers":
- spicy foods
- fried foods
- full-fat ice cream and milkshakes
- green peppers (such as on your favorite pizza)
But indulging in these foods doesn't have to spoil your weekend! Here's how to limit the damage:
Bring an over-the-counter product like bismuth subsalicylate. Bismuth subsalicylate has you covered* for symptoms of nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, and diarrhea. Follow the dosing instructions on the label. Adults can take another dose after half an hour, up to a maximum of 8 doses every 24 hours (or instead, another dose every half hour up to a maximum of 4 doses every 24 hours for extra strength products). For children, read the label for proper dosage instructions.
Choose the right clothes. Avoid clothes that fit tightly, especially around the waist. They can press into your stomach and make you feel uncomfortable after you've enjoyed a big meal. Instead, wear something with a bit more "give" around the waist.
Remember to chew. Take the time to chew and savour each bite of your favourite treats. Not only will you enjoy these delicious foods more, but you'll also reduce your chances of indigestion. Chew with your mouth closed and don't talk with food in your mouth - this can cause you to swallow air, which can make indigestion worse. If you're worried that your friends will gobble up all of your favourite food while you're busy chewing, put the food you want on a plate first, then start eating.
Stay upright after eating. After you've indulged in your favourite meal this weekend, stay upright so that the food stays in your stomach where it belongs. This can help reduce the chances that you'll suffer from heartburn or indigestion.
Take some time to recover. If you've overindulged, give yourself a break. Avoid stress, take a gentle walk, and avoid overeating again for a while. You can use products like bismuth subsalicylate to help relieve symptoms of heartburn, nausea, indigestion, upset stomach, or diarrhea.
