When is surgery an option?

Surgery is an option for people with AS when a joint is extensively damaged or pain is very severe. Surgery can help reduce pain, restore joint function, and improve mobility. Surgery for AS usually means replacing the damaged joint with an artificial joint. Often, it is a knee or the hip that needs replacement, and in many cases, the end result of severely damaged joints is a total hip joint replacement.
