Ask Bruce Krahn a question about fitness | | | | | Question Archive | | | Hi Bruce, I'm one of those rare people who have very high metabolism and therefore cannot keep my weight. What should I do to gain some weight (and hopefully some muscle)? | | | Bruce Krahn's Response | |

I am jealous! In order to build lean muscle tissue, you must increase your caloric intake. Find out how many calories you should be eating (www.ebodi.com will help you with this), and spread them out over 5 to 6 meals per day. Train with weights 3 to 4 days per week (focus on compound movements) and avoid cardio. Get plenty of rest and watch what happens!

- Besides exercise, would you recommend the use of weight-loss pills for losing weight? If so, which one would you recommend? I'm in shape but want to tone up the abs and lose the love handles.

- Hi Bruce, I'm a 24-years-old guy. I have the opposite problem as most people have, which is that I can't keep weight on. I have been weight lifting for a short period of time, and I have to eat enormous amount of food to ensure that I don't lose muscle mass. The problem is that I regularly eat fatty, unhealthy stuff because it's the easiest way for me to get calories. My diet consists of, among other things, pizza, burgers, fries, pasta, etc. I know that eating this unhealthy can't be a good thing, regardless of whether or not I am gaining weight. So here's my question: is there a way to keep my muscle mass and not have to eat so unhealthy, but at the same time not have to eat mountains of healthy food just to get enough calorie intake?

- I am 5 feet 1 inch tall and 156 pounds. Though I am following a sensible diet, I don't see any results (I am also taking medication for hypothyroidism). Which one would be more effective for me to lose weight as a hypothyroid patient?
- I am a 57-years-old male who has worked in an office-type environment for 30 years. My weight has now pushed me into the "obese" category on the BMI chart. Other than hours of daily, sweaty exercises or taking medications, is there anything I can do to increase my metabolic rate?

- I have been working out for the past 2 years and I have lost 30 pounds. My problem is that I have reached a plateau but I would like to lose another 20 pounds. My nutritionist said that I am not eating enough (1,200 to 1,500 calories a day) and I should be eating 1,600 to 1,800 calories a day. Is there anything else I can do to break through this plateau?
