Battling depression involves a number of strategies. Finding ways to relax is something you can do at home to help the overall process of beating depression.
How you relax depends a lot on your personality and what you enjoy doing. Perhaps you like to listen to a certain type of music, or be creative through art work. Maybe you enjoy taking a long hot bath, going for a walk, or getting a massage. The key is to give yourself permission to take the time during the day to do the things you like to do. Set up a particular time of the day that is just for you.
Your doctor or therapist can help teach you different types of structured relaxation therapy. The following are some relaxation techniques that you can ask your doctor or therapist about. These activities can help you relax and cope with everyday stresses. People who are very depressed, anxious, or have other types of emotional problems may not benefit from the relaxation techniques described below. Before you try any of these techniques, be sure to talk it over with your doctor or therapist.
Deep breathing exercises: For this activity, you need to clear your mind and focus only on your breathing. Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose and deep into your lungs so that the abdomen expands. Hold your breath for 3 or 4 seconds and slowly exhale through your nose or mouth. Repeat the exercise. You could try and do 20 minutes a day of deep breathing exercises. But be sure to ask your doctor if it's right for you. If you feel lightheaded, take a break.
Yoga: There are various types of yoga. Talk with your doctor or therapist and check if there are any classes offered in your area.
Meditation: For this relaxation activity, you will need to clear your mind by focusing on a particular thought or phrase, or on how you are feeling. The technique also involves trying to slowly tighten and then relax each muscle in the body, starting at the toes and moving up to the head.
Remember to regularly take time out for you. Learning to relax is an important step towards feeling better.
